As co-owner and head soapmaker at BumbleBee Lane Soapworks, I spend an inordinate amount of time on websites, forums and blogs, seeking knowledge, inspiration, and motivation. This blog is my venue for airing my thoughts and feelings on the discussions I find there. The handmade bath and body industry is booming, and everyone is jumping on the bandwagon, even the large commercial manufacturers, who are trying to position their products as natural and wholesome in an attempt to sway your purchasing power in their direction.
Couple that with the fact that there are no legal definitions for “natural” or “organic” in the cosmetic industry, and the door is wide open for these terms to be abused, and this is exactly what is happening.
One of the things that frustrates the handmade industry is the lack of transparency on the part of many of these commercial producers, as well as many small businesses who blithely claim that their soaps and lotions will do everything from clearing up your acne to curing cancer, with blatant disregard for the laws regulating cosmetic labelling and marketing.
In this blog, I am going to attempt to level the playing field, by exposing some of the fallacies that are being widely distributed in the name of marketing, and hopefully make you a more informed consumer.
Hmmm, that sounds a little pretentious! Hopefully I can do this with a sense of humour, and without becoming overbearing and heavy handed!
